The fast-food restaurant chain Sonic is looking to set up its first Rhode Island location in Smithfield, according to the town officials.
Town Planner Mike Phillips confirmed that the town planner will be meeting with a surveyor from the fast-food chain about the possibility of opening a new restaurant at the location of the now-closed Wendy’s on Route 44.
The chain is known for their drive-up service reminiscent of 1950’s burger chains where customers are served via “car hops” on roller skates.
The restaurant chain, popular in the south and central plains areas of the US, has been slowly expanding its reach into the northeast over the past few years.
Phillips said he would know more about the plan after discussing zoning and permits with the surveyor.
The nearest Sonic location according to the company’s website is in Wilmington Massachusetts.
