Wine Wednesday: Apothic White

During a meeting this week I was teased by one half of the morning show (can you guess who?) about not ever reviewing any white wines. Admittedly, I prefer reds…like way way more! A lot of whites I have tried taste like water, warm beer, or pancake syrup. Some people may like the taste of a sweet Rose, but I do not.

So it was with much reservation that I picked up a bottle of Apothic White. I am a fan of the Gallo Family’s Apothic Red, so I figured this might be a decent choice.

I read that the original “recipe” of Apothic White was Chardonnay, Moscato and Riesling, but in 2012 they switched it up to include Pinot Grigio instead of Moscato. Personally, I think this was a good move, making the blend crisper, and more refreshing.

This is still a fairly sweet wine, but I have to admit, it was pretty enjoyable to drink. You get a tropical fruit sweetness on the tongue, but the Chardonnay gives it a refreshing bite at the finish. It was nice to not have that typical syrupy sweetness lingering at the end.

My wife and I tasted three white blends last week to see which ones were actually decent: Gnarly Head Authentic White, Hot To Trot White Blend, and Apothic White. Hands down, Apothic wins. It’s not going to change my red-drinking ways, don’t get me wrong, but this is one white wine that I would be more than willing to sip on a hot summer evening while waiting for a nice fish or chicken filet to grill.

Pick it up everywhere for around $10 a bottle. Based on taste and price, on a 5 cork scale, Apothic White gets 3 corks!
